Popcorn Flicks. On the contemporary drama side
of things, I'm recommending David O. Russell's 2010 "The Fighter" for
various reasons. First, this is definitely one of the best movies of
2010. I've seen it three times now. Second, David O. Russell's
"Silver Linings Playbook" just got nominated for a billion things by
the Academy. Finally, it's disappearing from Netflix Instant on the
13th! So watch it soon if you plan to! The fight scenes are tremendous;
obviously inspired by Martin Scorsese's 1980 "Raging Bull." But what is
really amazing is that behind the batman mask and terribly distorted
voice, Christain Bale is an awesome actor. This movie is worth watching
just for his performance. The Oscar that year was very well-deserved.
Also, I am in love with Amy Adams.
On the genre flick side of
things, I'm recommending Brad Bird's 2011 "Mission Impossible: Ghost
Protocol." Brad Bird was the director of "Iron Giant," "Incredibles,"
and "Ratatouille." This is his first live-action film, and he's a
natural. He's particularly good at making the action sequences fun and
interesting to look at from an aesthetic point of view. Tom Cruise is
very good in this, looking older than ever. He also apparently did his
own stunts, so, wow. Check it out on Netflix Instant!
